Learn the Shim Sham @ Sneinton on Sunday 22 May

We’re doing something a little different this Sunday 22 May at Sneinton – The Shim Sham

This is a mostly solo old school jazz routine that Lindy Hoppers the world over dance together at events and parties.

We’ll be learning Frankie Manning‘s version to honour the great man in his Birthday month and celebrate the joy or our dance and all the fun we can have with it as we approach World Lindy Hop Day on 26 May.

Our regular Sunday classes will be replaced with a two hour workshop session from 6pm till 8pm to learn the routine and then we can social dance and practice through till 9pm. The session will cost just £5 and I know we’ll have a lot of fun 🙂

And all this fun will be housed at our usual venue, The Old School Hall, Windmill Lane, Sneinton, Nottingham – see you then!

Here are some clips to get you in the mood…

  1. I’ve tried to find the original of this video but instead came across this version filmed live at Frankie 95 in New York. Listen to the crowd go wild (I was one of them)! – Shim Sham really is Global  https://youtu.be/XTFh_Ty6YcE
  2. Here are dancers from Frankie 95 Shim Shamming in Central Park, NYC https://youtu.be/6OKcA1bLkQE
  3. The classic clip of the wonderful Frankie and Erin (during the revival years) demonstrating the steps … https://youtu.be/g2FyvoAi2ew
  4. This is a lovely Shim Sham inspired Lindy Hop routine from Thomas and Alicehttps://youtu.be/QYno_v0KkUs
  5. And finally if you want to know more about the fabulous Frankie Manning look no further … http://www.frankiemanning.com

Sunday 10 January 2016: Classes start back today!

Hurray! Classes start back today! Lindy Hop today and solo jazz roots tomorrow.  I’m really looking forward to seeing you all again and maybe some new folks too.

As always, all are welcome, just drop by. And you don’t need to come with a partner as we rotate in classes so that you learn to dance with everyone  🙂

Lindy Hop beginners class starts today at 5.30pm, Improvers at 7pm, Intermediates at 8.15pm and as usual there’s complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits to enjoy along with music before and in between classes through till 9pm so that you can practice your steps and enjoy the best reason for learning to Lindy Hop – social dancing 🙂

If this is your first time, we’re at The Old School Hall, Windmill Lane, Sneinton.  It’s 5-10 mins walk from the Ice stadium or if you’re driving follow the brown signs to Green’s Windmill and Science Centre and you’ll find a big, free to use, car park and our hall just in front of you.

Beginners class is just £4 per person (and £5 for the other levels with free entry to the preceding classes)

If you’re interested in the Solo Jazz (all levels) class, that’s also at the Old School Hall, starting tomorrow, Monday 11 January 2016 at 8pm and is also just £4.

See you all soon!

Sun 13 Dec: Christmas Tea Dance and Fuddle

We’ve been mentioning this for weeks but now I’ve finally gotten around to creating the Facebook event so it must be official! 🙂
NLH @ Sneinton: Christmas Party and Fuddle

£4 on the door, doors open at 6pm and we’ll dance on till 10/10.30pm. Whether you’ve been coming to classes forever or only a couple of weeks, wherever you usually dance, all are welcome!

Please bring food for the Fuddle for us all to share. I’ll provide the teas and coffees as usual but you can also bring your own. The fuddle’s been getting better and better lately, wonder what we can rustle up this time 🙂

There’ll be an introductory fun class, jam circles, snowballs, shim sham and dancing to great DJ’d swing music – no doubt with the obligatory occasional Christmas Swing tune 🙂 to dance your socks off to.
I’m really looking forward to seeing you all there and celebrating the end of another great year of swing dance in Nottingham. Merry Christmas Everyone!
