Swing Out @ Sneinton Festival – Sun 14 July 2pm

Sneinton Festival is rounding up this weekend by holding a picnic party at Green’s Windmill on Sunday 14 July from 12pm. There’ll be stalls, food, acoustic sets from local musicians and the Salvation Army Band will be playing from 2.45 to 3.30pm.

We’ve been invited along to join in the fun and play a few of our tunes and do a spot of dancing before and after the Salvation Army do their thing (i.e. 2pm ish and 3.30ish)Sneinton Festival 2013So all local dancers, we’d love to see you at Green’s Windmill (just behind our usual classes venue) in Sneinton at 2pm. We’ll play it by ear, and dance, whatever, whenever, wherever we can, but with the sun shining it should be a lovely afternoon regardless. We’ll dance some freestyle, maybe a shim sham… whatever we can in the time allowed.

Then, if you fancy sticking around, from 5pm (possibly sooner) until 9pm we’ll be able to go into our lovely Old School Hall (Windmill Lane, Sneinton, NG2 4QB have a cuppa, a chat and get our usual classes under way. Depending on who’s there, new dancers and/or familiar faces, I will stretch our usual format to fit, ensuring it’s fun for all who are there, regular attenders or new faces, fun classes, more social dancing time and maybe playing around with sharing some fun steals moves etc…

Greens Widmill

Anyway, really looking forward to seeing you lots of you out tomorrow afternoon regardless.

Oh and here’s our Frankie dance at the Windmill to get you all inspired…. http://frankiesbirthday.com/2013/05/30/frankie-99-from-nottingham-uk/

Shim Sham Day @ Sneinton – Today Sun 30 June

Hello!!!!  Well after a fabulous time at Bakewell Day of Dance yesterday I’ve decided today is Shim Sham Day at Sneinton 🙂

As this is short notice I’ll keep the class structure in place so if you’ve only time to come along to your usual class there’ll still be something to learn but if you can make the whole session from 5:30 you’ll get the chance to learn so much more.

This will be a great introduction for anyone who has never tried it before, a wonderful refresher for those who almost have it down, but keep forgetting those crucial bits, and a chance to learn some variations and styling for those of you who now just want to make their Shim Sham fabulous.

Now if you’ve never seen the Shim Sham before here are a couple of great clips to get you inspired.  We will be doing Frankie Manning’s version.  There are several others but this is the main one Lindy Hoppers all over the world learn and dance together at events.

These clips are from Frankie’s 95th Birthday Celebration. The first is a huge Shim Sham event in Central Park, New York City that for me really captures how much fun this is to do with fellow Lindy Hoppers (I’m in there somewhere if you can spot me!)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6OKcA1bLkQE

The second is a compilation of Shim Sham’s from all over the world, put together after a YouTube frenzy much like the one we recently joined in with for Frankie99 which perhaps gives you a glimpse of the big world wide family we Lindy Hoppers belong to and how much enjoyment this dance of ours brings.

Ok, so I’m biased and you know I love to go on about how great Lindy hop is 🙂 but it’d be great to see lots of you at class today learning to enjoy the Shim Sham as much as I do.  Even though much of it is without a partner, it’s something we all dance together and many of these dance steps can be slotted into your Lindy hop later on too – here’s how Thomas and Alice did it in style …

Old School Hall, by Green’s Windmill, Windmill Lane, Sneinton, NG2 4QB  from 5:30 to 9pm  £5 (or £4 if you only have time for an hour today)

May 2013: Frankie Manning Month and we turn 3!

Ok, so given that we have 2 bank holidays in May (when we don’t hold classes) there are actually only two Sundays this month for us Nottingham Lindy Hop Sneintonites to do anything at all but we’re about to make the most out of them.

We have a birthday to celebrate, we’ve been going for just over 3 years now, plus the whole Lindy world is gearing up in May to commemorate Frankie Manning, original Lindy Hop dancer, choreographer and innovator on what would have been his 99th Birthday therefore we think it’s time to party.

Frankie Manning, Ambassador of Lindy Hop, 1914-2009

Legendary Lindy Hopper Frankie Manning was born May 26th, 1914.  Though Frankie passed away just one month before his 95th birthday on April 27, 2009, we continue to celebrate the date of his birthday annually and on a global basis.

You can learn more about the great man at the following links.  The first is a brief history of his life and the second links to films and videos featuring Frankie from the 1930s/40s to his teaching years to documentaries about the man and the era.  I can’t recommend trawling through these enough.

Sunday 12 May – Learn Frankie99 Choreography

Tomorrow in classes we’ll be having a complete focus on learning a little bit of choreography that has been put together by two of his students, Ewa Burak and Lennart Westerlund.  It’s a routine that references some of Frankie’s signature steps that he used to teach and Lindy hoppers around the world have been invited to learn it,  perform and post a video of this dance, in a global tribute to Frankie!

All 3 classes will be focussed on learning different bits of the routine rather than rigidly following the usual levels format and all students are welcome to attend as many sessions as they’ve got the energy for. £4 for one hour, £5 for the session.

Have a look on line here to view the choreography, there’s also a written list of instructions and a table view too.  http://frankiesbirthday.com/get-involved/99choreo/

Sunday 19 May – Our 3rd and Frankie’s 99th Birthday Tea Dance & Filming

Next weekend we’re planning a small tea party at our regular venue, The Old School Hall, Windmill Lane, Sneinton, NG2 4QB open to all lindy hoppers.

Starting from about 6pm, in the place of the usual ‘fun taster class’ we do at our parties, we’ll be running through the Frankie99 choreography again.  This is to refresh people’s memories, add in a bit of clapping and cheering for those of us who either haven’t learned it or completely forgotten it and then we hope to do a little bit of simple filming to record our efforts; weather permitting this may well be outside.

The other Nottingham groups have all been learning this choreography too (and anyone with any experience can probably pick it up from the online video) so we’re hoping to get a good group together on the day.   I think there are also some other filming sessions being organised by the other groups, which you’d also be able to go to, and once we’ve all done we hope to add together all these sessions and fingers crossed we’ll have a fabulous Nottm video that we share with the world.  Here are a couple of the ones that have already been posted.

Inside the hall we’ll be playing some great tunes and we’ll again be asking everyone to bring some food to share in our big fuddle, cakes, savouries, anything is welcome and we’ll dance, eat, chat and dance some more all the way through till 10pm.  £4 if you bring food, £5 if you don’t.

So I look forward to seeing you all in Sneinton, on either or both of the next two Sundays, for some fabulous Lindy Hop, Frankie inspired fun and dancing,  These are definitely going to be a more the merrier type events, so please come and join us.

Friday 26 April – Alligator Gumbo at Malt Cross

A bunch of us are heading down to the Malt Cross, St James St, Nottingham tonight to swing out and simply enjoy some fab live music from Alligator Gumbo.  It’s shaping up to be a top night – care to join??

Alligator Gumbo are a 6 piece band from Leeds, serving up a hot taste of creole swing. The repertoire is built up of songs made famous by the likes of Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Jelly Roll Morton, and Billie Holiday, played in the traditional New Orleans style, with it’s fast paced melodies and improvisations over foot-stomping rhythms.

No Classes on Sunday 7th April – but social dancing is on at Live Jive

Hi Everyone!

Just to remind you all that there are — NO Lindy Hop Classes — at Sneinton today (Sunday 7th April) as we are still on an extended Easter Break.  So please don’t turn up at the Old School Hall today.

However, Solo Jazz is back tomorrow night on Monday 8th April and your lovely Lindy Hop classes will be back next week on Sunday 14th April, so I’ll look forward to seeing you all then.

In the meantime don’t forget that tonight is Live Jive in Radcliffe with music from Benny Lee and the Whistle Stop Five.  I know the team have been working on refreshing the music in between the sets so it promises to be a great night (more details can be found on our diary page ).

Hope to see some of in Radcliffe later otherwise at classes either tomorrow and/or next weekend.

HAPPY EASTER WEEKEND EVERYONE!!

Dancing Easter Rabbits

Now as most of you know, because it’s a bank holiday weekend, there are NO Classes on Sunday 31st March or Monday 1st April 2013 but that’s no reason not to get out and dance.

If you check out the NLH Diary Page on this site … https://nottinghamlindyhop.com/diary/ … you can always keep abreast of what’s going on 🙂

But in summary for this weekend:

  • You’ve got a double dose of Live Music from Swingologie – they’re at Hand & Heart tonight (Good Friday) and Nottm Contemporary Cafe Bar tomorrow (Saturday).
  • Then on Easter Sunday, Terry Hallett will be spinning some top danceable swing and rock ‘n’ roll tunes at The Gatehouse on Tollhouse Hill from 5.00pm.

All of these events are FREE – so what are you waiting for?!?!

Plus if you’ve already got tickets (it’s sold out now) there’s the Invisible Orchestra with Rollo Markee also at the Contemporary also on Easter Sunday – so all good stuff and plenty of opportunity to dance 🙂

Advance notice for Sunday April 7th – CANCELLED CLASSES – Due to a clash of commitments I’ve had to take the decision to cancel our Sunday Lindy Hop Classes for next week.  So, basically, you now have 2 weeks rest and recuperation (Easter and next week) and we look forward to seeing you all back on Sunday April 14th for new rhythms and patterns in each of your streams.

Now on Sunday 7th April it’s going to be Live Jive with Benny Lee and the Whistle Stop Five at Radcliffe (see the Diary page for more info) so don’t let the fact that there’s no class that week stop you going to this great social night.  Instead you can take a little more time to dress up in your finery and then head over to The Memorial Hall a little earlier than usual where I’ll see you all for a dance or three 🙂

Note: Solo Jazz on Monday 8th April will run as usual.
